Files & Folders:
Views - Win95/98

Title: Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101

For different tasks you need different views of the drives and folders that are on your computer. Windows offers a number of different views to help you out.

My Computer and Explorer windows both allow you to sort the contents in different ways and to display the contents list in different ways.

Views in WinXP are similar but the window is different.

Icon for My ComputerDouble-clicking the My Computer icon on the Desktop opens a window that shows your drives. Opening one of the drives or folders in a My Computer window will open a new window, by default. You can quickly get a large pile of windows.

A My Computer window shows only the contents of what is named in the Title bar. You cannot see what else in on the computer at the same time.

Views: My Computer

The labeled figure below of a My Computer window shows the Large Icon view, the default view.  Each type of file has its own icon image. Special areas like the Control Panel and the Recycle Bin have their own icons. Smaller versions of these icons appear in other views.

The Address bar and toolbar have been turned off for these illustrations to save space.

Folders are listed first, then files. The Large and Small Icon views list items alphabetically going across the window.  The List and Details views list items alphabetically down the column.

Icon - IE/Win98 Internet Explorer 4 and Win98 added the Web view. The difference is that the things in the window are treated as hyperlinks, like on a web page. A single click will open the folder or document instead of needing to double-click. Just pointing to a file or folder selects it and changes the pointer to a hand pointing. This makes some actions easier, but others harder. You'll have to try it out to see if the web view fits your working style.

Folder TreeAn Explorer window shows the folder tree, which shows you how all the drives and folders, are related to one another - which folders contain which other folders. Files do not show in the folder tree.

Explorer is quite useful when you are copying or moving files between folders because you see where you are putting things!!

Views: Explorer

Explorer can use all of the same views as My Computer. The default view is Details.

Explorer Panes

There are two panes in an Explorer window. The left pane contains the folder tree, which shows visually how the drives and folders are related to each other.

Plus - marks expandable folders  means that the drive or folder has subfolders in it.

Minus- marks collapsible folder  means that this drive or folder has been expanded in the folder tree, to display all its subfolders.

The right pane shows the contents of the drive or folder that is selected on the left. The name of the selected drive or folder is at the top of the right pane. In the case of a folder, the icon will change to Open folder an open folder.

The display for the right pane can be changed to use any of the views that My Computer windows used: Large Icons, Small Icons, List, Details, Web. The new view affects the right pane only.

Sorting pane contents

Normally the contents of the right pane are sorted alphabetically by name, with folders being listed first. Windows will remember your choice of view for this folder for awhile. Windows can only memorize a certain number folders. As you work with other folders, the choices for this folder will move to the bottom of the stack and finally be discarded.

You can sort based on the name, the size, the type, or the date modified . These are the column titles in the right pane. You can just click on a column title to sort. Or you can use the menu- View | Arrange by | Date Modified, for example.

In the Step-by-Step lessons, you will use My Computer windows first. Then you will work in Explorer windows. You will undo a lot of what you do in these exercises since they are just practice right now. Don't get dizzy!
