Who Am I?
|
|
My name is Jan Smith.
I am a mathematician by training, a teacher by profession, and a web
designer by intent. Since I love learning new things, writing for the Web is
a great choice. It changes every day! New browsers, new languages, new
effects. Truly a moving target!
What I practice the most is being a Christian. I do seem to need a
LOT of practice! All those virtues like patience and loving kindness don't
fall off a tree into your lap!
The Important Parts of Life:
Jan's Life Lessons-Stuff I've Learned
We're supposed to keep on learning all our lives. Well, I certainly have.
I've written down some of the more important lessons I've learned after I
"grew up". ( también en español)
I
am working, slowly, on a collection of thoughts and articles on spiritual
themes - the most important part of life.

My family:

The Smith family - August 2000
Alice, Tommy, Jan, Forrest, Beth
(not shown: Tracey and her husband
Matt)

Our daughter Tracey received her MS from
University of Washington in Technical Communications, and her BS in
physics from Lipscomb University.
She is married to Matt Wagner, a pretty nice fellow from St. Louis,
MO. Matt finished his PhD in chemical engineering in June, 2002. His
undergraduate degree is from Vanderbilt University.
Tracey and Matt are now in Cincinnati, Ohio where Matt is working for
Proctor & Gamble as a research chemist. They bought a real house at
last, after 2 condos. At least they are only a few hours away now
instead of a whole day in the car!

Our daughter Beth graduated from Lipscomb also, majoring in
psychology. She spent a semester in Vienna, Austria, learning history
onsite. Cool! |

 |
|
Beth has earned her MA in school psychology
Middle Tennessee State University and worked as a school psychology
intern in Dallas for the 2002-2003 school year. She actually earned full
salary!
Beth finished her EdS at MTSU in the summer of 2003. In the fall
of 2003 she started starting the PhD program at
Texas Woman's University, while still working as a school
psychologist in the Dallas school
system. Who knew she would be so smart!

 |
Our son Forrest graduated in 2003 from Cumberland County
High School (CCHS), the Jets. He loves computers and soccer, and can do
about as much damage with one as with the other.
He is
finishing his degree in Real-time Interactive Simulation this summer
(2007) at
DigiPen
Institute of Techology in Redmond, Washington, where he learned to
program games. He has a regular, full-time job at
Gas Powered Games! Forrest has wanted to do this
since he was 6 years old!

My husband Luther T. (Tommy), who is still starting to think
about what he wants on his web
site (after several years!).

My live-in mother-in-law, Alice, who says computer-talk is "All
Greek to me!" |

Hobbies & Interests
|
I am an avid reader of most anything, but especially science
fiction. It stretches the brain and challenges our assumptions.
Some of my favorite sci fi authors are:
- Anne McCaffrey
- Arthur Clarke
- David Brin
- Orson Scott Card
- Diane Duane
- Isaac Asimov
Other favorite fiction authors include:
- Karen Kingsbury
- Dick Francis
- Agatha Christie
- Georgette Heyer
- Louis L'Amour
- Francine Rivers
Recently I've been reading and learning from books by Evelyn
Christenson and Stormie Omartian on how to pray. Fascinating
and exciting stuff!
The Left Behind book series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B.
Jenkins is fascinating. It's about what it might be like to be left
behind when all the Christians and young children vanish. They have been
taken to heaven in the "rapture". The concepts come from the book of
Revelations at the end of the Bible. I don't think the books are
particularly accurate as to what will really happen in the future. But
they portray people and their reactions vividly and make you think hard
about God and the end times.

|
My blood must run green as I've been a
Girl Scout for 30+ years now:
- 11 years as a girl
- 12 years as a troop leader
- spent 11 or 12 years as the Service Unit Manager (chief local
volunteer). I have finally stepped back from this job.
