Screen Capture

You may need a picture of something you see on your computer to show someone else, like a tech support person or a teacher or just to share something cute or interesting with friends. You can capture a picture of anything on your computer!

  1. Icon: Keyboard Use the button PrtScn on the keyboard to capture the whole screen. Or, use
    ALT + PrtScn to capture an image of the current window.
    PrtScn = Print Screen
  2. Open the program Paint (which comes with Windows) or a similar graphics editing program.
    Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint
  3. Maximize the Paint window.
  4. Paste the image you captured into Paint.
  5. To keep only part of the image: Drag across the part of the image you want to keep and then click the Crop button on the ribbon.
    Only what was selected remains.
  6. To add text: Click the Text tool on the ribbon and then click on the image where you want your text to appear. A text box appears, ready for you to type.
    Make any changes you want to the font, font size, or color before leaving the text box! Once you quit editing, the text becomes part of the image and cannot be edited with the text tools any more.
  7. To use the image in another program: Copy, switch to the other program, and paste. In some situations you may need to save the image first and use the other program to find and insert it.
  8. To save the image: Use the key combo CTRL + S or on the menu File > Save...
    You can pick a location and a file type for the image. The types that Paint can save as should be useable in other programs.
