Title: Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101

Help windows have different styles in different versions.

Win98 uses a window with two panes. In the left pane you see the three tabs: Contents, Index, and Search. The tabs stay in view on the left while the topics appear on the right.

How Help Works

Win98 Help - toolbar and tabsOn the Contents tab you see a list of main topics marked with Help topic a book icon. A document is marked with a Help document page icon.

Clicking a document name opens that document in the right pane. The left pane remains unchanged. You do not need to double-click.

Having the list remain open is a big advantage if you are hunting through a number of topics or search results.

The window has a toolbar of buttons at the top.

  • Hide button  Show button Hide/Show toggles the display in the left pane on and off. When the left pane is off, the button says Show. When the left pane is on, the button says Hide.
  • Back and Forward buttons The Back and Forward buttons move you back and forth through the list of topics you have opened in this visit to Help, just like in a web browser.
  • Options button Options has a list some extra commands that you don't usually need.
  • Web Help button Web Help connects you over the Internet to Microsoft's online support, if you have an open connection at the time.
